Maze: Shifting Boundaries
Altering Boundaries and Exploring the Untouchable Freedom Through Dance
Maze: Shifting Boundariesis the latest work of Pewan Chow, recipient of this year’s Artist of the Year (Dance) by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, and Artistic Director of Passoverdance. It is also a sequel to Maze, winner of the 2013 Hong Kong Dance Award for Outstanding Independent Production. The new performance features 20 young dancers and four professional dancers in six performances at three shopping malls.
The new work addresses the boundaries in our society or systems, where “the boundaries may be constantly shifted”. It is reflected in the sets—the large movable panels are replaced by 35 movable pillars. In some moments, the dancers dance between the pillars; in others, they move the pillars on the stage. It symbolizes boundaries that may be changed, and prompts the audience to rethink and explore the possibilities of freedom.
